Prehistoric Fluted Rim Potteries in Southern Regions
Early fluted rim pottery has been discovered at sites from the early Neolithic period,includ-ing the first phase of Dingshishan in Yongning,Guangxi, the second phase of Qihedong in Zhangping,Fuji-an,and the Shangshan Culture in Zhejiang.Among them, the fluted rim and cord-marked round-bottomed pottery of the Dingshishan-Pengtoushan culture system in South China have had a broad influence through-out the southern region. The origin of prehistoric fluted rim pottery is directly related to the development of early pottery-making techniques. The appearance of early fluted rim pottery in various regions is synchro-nous,primarily aimed at reinforcing and refining the mouths of vessels.Fluted rim pottery represents one of the elements of prehistoric cultural exchange and interaction. Its spreading and influence are mainly facilitat-ed through iconic pottery traditions, with variations in acceptance and duration in different cultures and re-gions.In the Longshan period, except for the Baodun Culture in the Sichuan Basin, the tradition of fluted rim pottery in other regions of the southern area has mostly declined or been interrupted. This may be related to the progress in pottery-making techniques or changes in local cultural traditions.
