Cultural Exchange and Chronological Relationships Between Southeast Coastal Region and Central Plains During Early Bronze Age
A comparative analysis of the potteries from the Xinzhai and Erlitou Cultures in the Central Plains and the Maqiao Culture in the southeastern coastal region around the Taihu Lake during the early Bronze Age indicates that close cultural exchanges between the two regions existed as early as the Xinzhai Culture. The interaction between these areas was primarily characterized by the assimilation of advanced ele-ments from the Central Plains by the Maqiao culture. The early stage of the Maqiao culture roughly corre-sponds to the phases of the Xinzhai and Erlitou cultures, and the transition between the early and middle stages of the Maqiao culture aligns with the fourth phase of the Erlitou culture. From an archaeological per-spective,this study corroborates historical records from various dynasties regarding legends and deeds relat-ed to Dayu in the Jiangsu and Zhejiang regions. It indicates that during the early Xia Dynasty, the Xia people had already influenced the southeastern coastal area around the Taihu Lake, engaging in extensive cultural exchanges with the local inhabitants.
