Restoration of Interior Scaffold Facilities of Tomb M1 in Xigang Cemetery of the Ancient City of Zhu
The unique form and complete structure of the Warring States tomb M1 in the Xigang Ceme-tery of the ancient city of Zhu,located in present-day Zoucheng,Shandong Province, provide crucial data for studying issues related to the tomb construction and burial practices during the Zhou Dynasty. The remains of column niches, column holes, and grooves on the tomb's partition wall can be recovered as a shaft-type wooden platform connecting the tomb chamber and the burial passage. This platform is believed to be a tem-porary scaffolding facility used in the construction of the tomb or the interment of the tomb owner.Such shaft-type wooden platform facilities represent an efficient and practical engineering technology employed during the Zhou Dynasty for the construction of deeply buried vertical tombs. It serves as a valid demonstra-tion for explaining the burial facilities and the interment process recorded as"jun feng yi heng"in literature.
