Achieving Balance in Tensive Relations:Observation and Analysis based on Museum Definition
On August 24,2022,the new museum definition was officially approved at the 26th General Assembly of the International Council of Museums(ICOM)held in Prague. The challenging revision process, along with the new definition itself, has sparked extensive discussions within and outside the museum world. The new definition skillfully addresses longstanding tensions within museums and ultimately achieves a cle-ver balance in the definition text.Specifically,the"two-paragraph"definition adeptly handles the relation-ships between the essential and the optional, the universal and the diverse.Departing from the radical stance taken three years ago,it considers both the historical and contemporary contexts. It inherits tradition while maintaining a foresight and guidance for potential changes. For the first time, ethics and professionalism are incorporated into the definition, serving the sustainable development of museums in a complementary rela-tionship.Rather than being a mere compromise among various parties,it is more accurate to say that the new museum definition maximally satisfies the expectations of diverse parties regarding what a museum is.
