Integrity and Innovation:Reflections on Sociomuseology(Social Museology)and Its Applicability in China
The current value of museums has been shifted towards maximizing the well-being of the public, and thus prompting museums to continuously engage with external environments and build close,or-ganic relationships with them.Disciplines such as Sociomuseology(Social Museology)and their sub-disciplines have emerged in response to this intricate societal situation.Initially, museums were brought into sociology as its research subjects;then sociology was also introduced to the museum domain. After clarifying the back-ground,connotation,academic history, and relationship between Sociology of museums and Sociomuseology(Social Museology),this paper contends that Sociomuseology offers two primary advantages, but faces draw-backs including"a lack of professional depth and a vague definition of its position within Museology".Di-rectly importing international models to China or blindly adopting the research questions of sociology is inap-propriate,as it could affect the problem recognition, professional advancement and disciplinary development in this field in China, potentially leading to an overemphasis on the socialization of museums and the neglect of their professional aspects.Innovation is not without merit, but creativity that upholds core principles is the most meaningful.
