Context,Strategies, and Effects of Museum Exhibition Communication from the Perspective of Meaning
Exhibition is an important medium for museums to serve the society. With the shift in the concept of communication, the process of museum exhibitions from initial planning to opening to the public can be understood as a process of meaning making, negotiating, and sharing. Attention to meaning inspires museums to focus on the context of exhibition communication, where institutional, academic, and contempo-rary contexts guide exhibition development and impose constraints. Key strategies in the meaning making phase include:goal transformation,pre-assessment,diverse interpretation, and multi-channel promotion. Through negation and exchanges, museums and audiences may share meanings from four dimensions:cogni-tive construction, social interaction, physical and mental enjoyment, pleasure, and resonant reflection. Based on these interactions between museums and audiences, the model of exhibition meaning communication can be refined to facilitate effective communication in museum.
