Excavation Report on Southern Dynasties Tombs M4 and M5 in Yangcun,Jiangning District,Nanjing
From May to September 2008,the Nanjing Municipal Museum conducted excavations of two brick chamber tombs(M4 and M5)from the Southern Dynasties in Yangcun,Guli Subdistrict,Jiangning Dis-trict,Nanjing.The excavation yielded over 50 sets of burial artifacts. The two tombs, oriented south and ar-ranged side by side, had similar structures and were both double burials, likely belonging to a family. The tombs feature a"凸"-shaped plan with a single-chambered arched ceiling, consisting of a sealed door wall,a passageway, and the main burial chamber, with a stone door set in the passageway.Notably,Tomb M4 was undisturbed by looters and retained its stone coffin base and surrounding stone couch.Based on the architec-tural style and artifacts recovered,it is inferred that Tomb M5 predates M4,with the periods corresponding to the Southern Dynasties'Song and Liang periods respectively. This family tomb provides critical data for studying the burial sites and evolutionary patterns of the high nobility during the Southern Dynasties.
