Study on Ceramic Cup Stands from the Three Kingdoms to the Sui Dynasty
Cup stands are a type of combined tea set designed to hold cups on trays, first appearing in the late Eastern Wu period in Jiangxi.By the early to mid-Southern Dynasties, they were primarily distributed along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and began spreading to other regions. In the late Southern Dynasties, cup stands started to make their way into the northern areas and saw a rapid increase along the Fujian coast, likely linked to the maritime trade of tea leaves and ceramics.Throughout their origin and dissemination, cup stands often formed part of tea service sets with jars, tea boilers, and tripod basins, creating a cultural chain from tea storage and brewing to consumption. This marks the maturation of tea cul-ture in China.
