Interaction of strong earthquakes and volcanoes in Chinese Mainland
Both strong earthquakes and volcanic eruptions represent significant energy exchanges in Earth's deep interior.Recent observations have revealed close interactions between strong earthquakes and volcanic activities. However, our understanding of the nature and tectonic processes of strong earthquakes and volcano activities remains limited, and our current knowledge of the magma system falls short of the requirements needed to predict volcanic eruptions promoted by strong earthquakes and strong earthquake activities triggered by volcanic fluid migration.Potential interactions between strong earthquakes and volcanic activities have been identified in the Changbaishan and Tengchong volcanic fields in Chinese Mainland. The Tengchong volcanic area, prone to severe earthquake disasters and potential volcanic eruptions,is an ideal location to study the interaction between strong earthquakes and volcanoes.Based on the multi-disciplinary observation facilities of the China Seismic Experimental Site and support of related research projects,we anticipate shedding new light on our understanding of the interaction between strong earthquakes and volcanic activities in the Tengchong volcanic area, and provide scientific and technological support for the effective prevention of strong earthquakes and volcanic disasters,as well as for the exploration and development of thermal energies.
