Research on the Export Trade Pattern and Competitiveness of Agricultural Products from Shandong Province to Africa
Expanding into emerging markets, such as Africa,is one of the key work objectives outlined in the 2024 Shandong Provincial Government Work Report.Based on the trade data from 2015 to 2022,this paper analyzes the export trade pattern of agricultural products from Shandong Province to Africa, and uses the relevant measurement index of international trade competitiveness to measure the trade competitiveness of Shandong's agricultural prod-ucts in the African market. The results show that the changes of agricultural export volume of Shandong Province to Africa can be roughly divided into a slow growth stage from 2015 to 2017 and a phase of significant fluctuating growth stage from 2018 to 2022.The exports are mainly concentrated in West Africa,North Africa, and South Afri-ca.The primary exported agricultural products to Africa are plant products, followed by food, beverages and feed, while live animals and animal products,as well as animal and plant decomposition products and their derivatives, accounts for a smaller proportion. The competitiveness of the four major categories of agricultural products in the African market urgently needs improvement.None of the categories have a comparative advantage in the African market, and their market shares are relatively low.Only plant products, food, beverage and feed products have maintained a weak competitive advantage in the African market over the long term.Based on these findings, the study proposes strategies to promote the development of Shandong's agricultural exports to Africa from the aspects of expanding trade regions, increasing trade scale, and enhancing market competitiveness.
