Demand for outdoor activities at residents in the cold areas shows a diversified trend with the develop-ment progress of society. As a place closely connected with residents' daily activities, the environmental quality and spatial vitality of residential areas, especially the pedestrian space of old residential areas have not been improved. The citizens in Shuangyashan city suffer from winter snow, low temperature, and strong wind, leading to the reduc-tion of residents' outdoor activity time and travel times. Taking representative residential areas as the research ob-jects,the existing problems of pedestrian space in the city analyzed. The optimization design principles are proposed to meet the development requirements of a healthy city and the increasing activity needs of residents, providing the reference for improving the quality of pedestrian space in residential areas of cold cities.
