RESEARCH ON UNDERGROUND SPACE DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES WITH RETAINED EXISTING BUILDING FACADES
Urban renewal has entered a large-scale phase, facing the challenge of deciding whether to demolish or retain historical buildings with low overall preservation value but significant importance in shaping the historical en-vironment or carrying civic memories. In such cases,a powerful approach to urban renewal is to use the"retain the skin, replace the guts"method, where valuable historical facades are preserved while the internal functions are rede-veloped.This paper uses the underground space development project of the 69 Jianguo East Road,Zhonghai,as a case study to illustrate the strategies for developing underground spaces beneath existing buildings. It compares and analyzes various development strategies and excavation methods under the condition of retaining the facades of large-scale existing buildings, addressing technical, economic, and scheduling issues. The project ultimately adopt-ed the in-situ shoring and reverse construction method for implementation, providing a reference for similar future projects.
