Red Knot( Calidris canutus) is a long-distance migratory wader which has a circumpolar tundra breeding range. The coastal area of Bohai Bay is an important northward migration stopover site for this species. In 2003 and 2004, migration patterns of Red Knots were investigated around the Shuanglong River estuary (118°21′E,37°2′N) in northern Bohai Bay. The results indicate that: the peak number of Red Knots occurs from the end of April to early of June; the maximum number of Red Knots was 3814 birds observed on 15th May 2004. During the surveys, 17 Red Knots with Australian and New Zealand leg flags were observed at the research site. These sightings show that both the piersmai subspecies, which winters in northwest Australia, and the rogersi subspecies, which winters in southeast Australia and New Zealand, use northern Bohai Bay as a stopover site during their annual northward migrations.
