The Evolvement and Prospects of Information Literacy Instruction in Wuhan University Library in the Past 40 Years
Since the Notice on "Opinions on Setting up Courses of 'Literature Retrieval and Utilization' in Colleges and Universities" issued by the State Education Commission (now the Ministry of Education) in 1984,information literacy instruction (ILI) in Chinese universities has been making continuous progress. The 40 years are worth of remembering by library community. ILI in Wuhan University Library (WHU Library) started early and has consistently developed well. This paper aims to analyze the evolution, development motivations and experiences of ILI in WHU Library over the past 40 years, and propose prospects for future development, which seeks to enhance influence of ILI in WHU Library and also advocate ILI in Chinese academic library community. In order to comprehensively present the evolution of ILI in WHU Library over the past four decades,we consulted with librarians of WHU Library and teachers engaged in literature retrieval courses, conducted archival research of WHU Library and literature review on documents written by librarians of WHU (including those from the universities merged into WHU in 2000) since 1970. It is found that the 40-year evolution of ILI in WHU Library can be divided into four stages. The first stage is from 1974 to 1997,when literature retrieval courses were in an infancy and exploration phase. The second stage is from 1998 to 2003,during which time, literature retrieval courses were coexisted and complemented with computer information retrieval courses. The third one is from 2004 to 2021,marking transition and development of computer information retrieval towards ILI. The fourth stage, from 2022 to the present, representing transition and development of ILI towards digital literacy instruction (DLI). The development motivations of ILI in WHU Library primarily stem from the following four aspects, including national policy traction, professional framework guidance, needs of teachers and students and emerging technology empowerment. The 40-year exploration of ILI in WHU Library has a significant impact on universities and Chinese society. Therefore, this paper summarizes experiences of WHU library ILI over the past 40 years, including the curricula, teaching methods, contents, teaching goals, construction of educational resources and other perspectives, which seeks to offer some insights for ILI practice of academic libraries nationwide. In the future,WHU library will be more proactive in promoting innovation of ILI. In conclusion, standing at the new start point of the 40th anniversary of ILI in Chinese academic libraries, academic library community in China should further constantly strive for the high-quality development of ILI.
