Research on Collaborative Publishing Service of University Library and University Press Oriented to Value Network——Based on Research from iCaucus Institutions in North America
Collaboration and cooperation is required on the university level to facilitate the transformation of university libraries as the future learning hub. Compared with universities abroad,there is little collaboration between university-based libraries and presses in China and the progress of cooperation is relatively slow. It is of great practical significance to establish the library-press collaboration to improve library services,optimize operational layout and assist scholarly communications effectively. With methodology of literature review and case analysis,it provided an overview of the changing role of the library in the scholarly publishing and the rising phenomenon of library-press collaboration,investigated the collaborative practices of publishing service among iCaucus colleges and universities listed in the Library Publishing Directory released by Library Publishing Coalition from 2021 to 2023 in North America from the perspective of collaborated governance,value creation and value flow. Case studies reveal three types of library-press collaboration initiated by libraries,presses and the two parties with different modes of publishing services and responsibilities. By analyzing the differences of governance mechanism of university-based libraries and presses in China and abroad,it proposes the collaboration framework with Chinese characteristics based on the theory of collaborative development and value network. (1) To implement collaborative governance in training,fund-raising and personnel based on the strengths of both parties or established a working group to supervise the collaboration from upper level to ensure the distribution of interests between parties involved in the collaboration. (2) To integrate resources in a range of forms including scientific data,ancient books and academic publications for value-added cooperation. On the one hand by the exchange of resources and services to achieve better social benefit,on the other hand by bridging the gaps between standards of classification,metadata and cataloging formats for more efficient academic communications. (3)To develop platforms jointly to facilitate the flow of knowledge with proper digital copyright protection and intellectual property services. Oriented by value network and aimed at collaborative development,the two parties will establish strategic alliances and host ties with shared benefits. Over the long term and at scale,library-press collaborations can result in a landscape where high-quality resources are available to all under a more sustainable and effective scholarly communication system.
