Internationalization of Chinese Rare Books Conservation:Field Exchange and Collaborative Experience Based on the University of British Columbia Library
This paper,based on the author's experience of field exchanges and collaborations at the University of British Columbia (UBC) Library in Canada,shares specific cases and experiences of international cooperation in the conservation of Chinese ancient books from a micro perspective. Through the lens of specific cases,the paper discusses the importance,feasible methods,and considerations involved in international cooperation on the conservation of Chinese ancient books,aiming to provide guidance and inspiration for similar efforts by domestic institutions while promoting the global dissemination of Chinese ancient book conservation and cultural heritage inheritance.To begin with,the literature review systematically examines the current situation and practical experiences in the field,noting that existing literature mainly focuses on the training of talents and practical introductions to ancient book preservation abroad,but lacks in-depth analysis,beginning with specific cases and a micro perspective. The section on collaborative background introduces the previous communication between the parties and the situation of ancient Chinese book collections at the UBC Library. The main work conducted includes efforts in ancient book restoration,digitization,and the establishment of conservation labs,which deepen the understanding of international cooperation. The research methodology is reflected in the author's participation in the practical aspects of ancient book restoration,digitization work,and providing specific professional advice.The research results show that significant progress has been made in ancient book restoration,digitization,and other aspects,laying a solid foundation for subsequent cooperation. The section on reflection and summary emphasizes the importance of internationalization in ancient book conservation and proposes measures to improve and enhance the concepts and techniques of ancient book conservation,as well as the significant importance of promoting Chinese ancient book conservation standards internationally. It also summarizes feasible ways of international cooperation in ancient book conservation,including cooperation in restoration,capacity building,and technical exchanges,as well as suggestions to strengthen intellectual property protection,actively promote Chinese narratives,and explore opportunities for deeper cooperation.Through international cooperation,the profound historical and cultural significance behind ancient books will be more widely disseminated and shared,thereby promoting the development and progress of human civilization. Therefore,strengthening international cooperation is one of the important ways to promote the conservation and inheritance of Chinese ancient books,worthy of the joint efforts of all countries.
