The Organization and Text Analysis of Academic Manuscripts in University Libraries——A Case Study of Gan Xifen Manuscripts from RUC Library
Academic manuscripts refer to handwritten documents produced by scholars in the process of academic research and teaching.As one of the key components of the featured collections of university libraries,they are not only precious first-hand materials of high academic value and historical significance,but also serving as the unique form of knowledge services provided by the library.To systematically organize,study and utilize the academic manuscripts collections is one of the pressing issues currently faced by university libraries.With the the methodology of literature review and historical research,it made a comparative study of the organization of ancient manuscripts,medieval manuscripts and early modern manuscripts,taking the academic manuscripts of the famous Chinese journalism theorist Gan Xifen in Renmin University of China Library as an example to showcase the organization and text analysis of academic manuscripts.By morphology analysis,it explores the academic aptitude and ethical values of Gan,exemplifying the in-depth research and utilization practices of academic manuscripts in humanities and social sciences.The case indicates the general route of manuscripts organization including the handling of manuscripts with standardized procedures,the specific metadata standards generated from Chinese Cataloging Rules,General International Standard Archival Description recorded with CNMARC for in-depth disclosure and effective display of resources,the proper classification method to meet patrons'searching demands and two-level directory resource description reflecting the general attributes and access points of manuscripts which lays foundation for further implementation of linked-data research and data mining,especially the linked-data of scholars,to achieve structured and semantic text adapted for intelligent retrieval in the future.It recommends the widely recognized archival organization theory of the principle of source,which refers to the principle of organizing and sorting the manuscripts according to the coming source of the manuscripts for collection integrity.It summaries the text analysis process of the manuscripts from the perspective of statistics,genres and content,time spans,editions as well as academic and aesthetic values.It provides feasible path for other libraries to standardize the organization of academic manuscripts,demonstrating references for manuscripts deep analysis and effective utilization in humanities and social sciences,and serving as a good library practice with cultural and educational function to advance the development of library science.
