Although the number of indigenous films in New Zealand is limited, they engage deeply with colonial history and heritage, reflecting the interaction and dialogue between contemporary cinema and historical narratives.By the late 1970s,the narrative approach to colonial experiences in films underwent a significant transformation. The paradox of a land without history and the desire to construct historical subjects provoked questions about identity. The representation of history became an imaginative space for carrying societal anxieties and explorations.Against the backdrop of dramatic changes in both domestic and international environments,New Zealand's colonial history films reflect societal dynamics, serving as a bridge to unresolved identity issues, while also implying an omission of the essence of these issues.
