Research on the stable utilization of recycled materials from waste concrete in asphalt concrete
To realize the convenient and efficient utilization of waste concrete, based on the analysis results of the macro and micro properties of recycled materials with different particle size ranges and the main en-gineering performance of their asphalt concrete, the suitable particle size range of recycled materials that can overcome the property defects of RCA and the suitable utilization plan of recycled materials in asphalt concrete within this particle size range are determined. The results indicate that the poor material proper-ties and large variability of material properties of RCA,caused by the gaps and cracks at the interface be-tween mortar and crush aggregate,as well as internal pores and cracks in the mortar layer, are significantly improved with the decrease of the particle size of recycled materials.Especially when recycled materials exist in powder form, the material properties are very uniform. Therefore,it is recommended to reuse the waste concrete in the form of recycled powder. The combined use of high alkaline cement and recycled pow-der can eliminate the potential adverse effect of high SiO2 content in recycled powder on the performance of asphalt concrete. When the volume ratio of recycled powder to cement is 3:1,asphalt concrete can be pre-pared with water stability, high and low temperature performance, and fatigue performance that meet the requirements of the Technical Specification for Highway Asphalt Pavement Construction(JTG F40-2004).
