The occurrence characteristics and sources of 30 kinds of antibiotics in seven categories in the cross sections of main stream and tributaries of the Yangtze River in Nanjing,Suzhou and Taizhou were examined by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC)triple quadrupole mass spectrometry. The results show that the detected concentration of each antibiotic ranges from ND(not detected)to 7.79 ng/L,the highest concentrations of chloramphenicols, lincomycins, and sulfonamides are 59.48、55.14 and 30.87 ng/L,accounting for 37.5%,34.8%,and 19.5%of total concentration of antibiotics, respectively. And no tetracyclines are detected.A large number of quinolones and macrolides residues are detected in the effluents of wastewater treatment facilities from hospitals, pharmaceutical enterprises and urban wastewater treatment plants, indicating that the existing traditional wastewater treatment processes have limited biodegradation ability for those antibiotics. Therefore, the long-term accumulation of antibiotics in the main stream and tributaries of Jiangsu section Yangtze River still has high ecological and health risks, and further attention should be paid to the development and application of advanced oxidation, biological enhanced treatment, and new combined treatment techniques in the future.
