China's country and region studies have their own history, development path and contemporary characteristics. In September 2022,the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council and the Ministry of Education issued the"Catalogue of Disciplines and Majors for Postgraduate Education(2022)",which determined that country and region studies would be included in the catalogue of first-level disciplines in the 14th category of interdisciplinary disciplines. The disciplinarization of country and region studies is of great significance for promoting the construction of China's independent knowledge system and conducting high-quality international relations research. The theoretical formation of country and region studies also needs to be based on long-term field observations and sufficient investigations and research.Observing new changes and discovering new problems are the important values of field research. To this end, editors of this journal invited experts in the field of Russian and Eurasian studies in China to compile their latest field research results in Russia,Kazakhstan,Uzbekistan and other countries and regions, especially after the end of the COVID-19 pandemic and the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict,to form a documentary conversation for readers. This issue of discussions mainly includes the following contents:war memories in Russia;the progress of China-Kazakhstan relations and the results of cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative;the living conditions, cultural identity and social governance challenges of Central Asian labor migrants in different regions of Russia;the specific manifestation and implementation of"Turn to the East"in Russian social life under the background of the Ukrainian crisis;the social life in Russia under the background of sanctions imposed by the United States and Western countries, and the cooperation between China and Russia in the fields of education, scientific research, infrastructure, etc. These field investigations and the analysis and insights formed by them provide a refreshing perspective on these issues. This demonstrates that field investigation is an indispensable and important method and means for conducting country and region research.
