The Phonological Transcription of Gei 给 and Kui 馈in Chinese Textbooks in the Joseon Dynasty and Related Issues:Supplementary Materials for the Pronunciation of[kei]给,the Verb of GIVE
This paper comprehensively explores the phonological transcription of gei 给 and kui馈 in the Korean alphabet in the Chinese textbooks in the Joseon Dynasty, and points out that the pronunciations of gei 给 and kui 馈 in these documents are completely different.Gei 给 is marked as[tɕi]as actual pronunciation, while kui 馈 is marked as[kəi].The transcription of gei 给 in these documents also shows that scholars at that time believed gei 给 is the same word as Juli Qie 居立切 in MC phonology.Kui 馈 denoting GIVE was not found in documents compiled in China by Chinese scholars, and was also highly unevenly distributed in Joseon Dynasty documents, which shows that the new colloquial pronunciation,i.e.the Beijing dialect, had not been widely recognized and accepted at that time.
