The -Er 儿 -Suffixation and -Er 儿 -Fusion in Hongcun Dialect in Yixian County in Anhui Province
The nominal diminutive of Yixian dialect in Anhui province is mainly encoded by adding a binding phoneme[-n]to the preceding noun,the very equivalent to the Mandarin-er儿-triggered fusion.Another marginal strategy for diminutive is-er 儿-suffixation,which is de facto realized by suffixation of the more full-fledged syllable[nε(i)ɐ(ɩ)]儿.These two diminutive strategies have different distributions and functions.Since it applies now only to a small fraction of head nouns,-er 儿 -suffixation is reasonably seen as the remnant on the wane.
