On the Etymology of the Passive Markers in Southern Min Cluster of Min Dialect in Fujian,Guangdong and Taiwan Provinces
This paper attempts to explore the etymology of the passive markers in Southern Min cluster of Min dialect in Fujian,Guangdong and Taiwan from both synchronic and diachronic perspectives. It argues that the passive markers in contemporary Southern Min dialects are all derived from their uses as a GIVE verb, which is consistent with the previous viewpoints that most of the passive markers in southern Chinese dialects or Min dialects are derived from verbs of giving. In early Southern Min dialects, however, passive markers can also be derived from their uses as a SUFFER verb.In addition, passive markers that are derived from verbs of suffering emerged earlier than those that are derived from verbs of giving.
