On the Evolvement and Strata of the Nanjing Pronunciation Type of MC Zhi 知,Zhuang 庄 and Zhang 章 Initial Groups in Dialects of Huangxiao Cluster,Jianghuai Mandarin
It has widely been accepted in recent years that the phonetic condition of the differen-tiation of MC initials of Zhi知with 2nd division finals and Zhuang 庄 is the height of the main vowel.This paper argues that such theory cannot apply to dialects of Nanjing pronunciation type of Huangxiao cluster,Jianghuai Mandarin,in which the colloquial of MC Zhi知initial with 2nd division finals and Zhuang 庄 initial pronounce[ts],while the literal with low main vowels pronounce[tş]group initials.Those of MC Zhi知initial with 3rd division finals and Zhang 章initial pronounce[tş]group initials.Thus,the precursor of the Nanjing Type of Huangxiao cluster of Jianghuai Mandarin is actually Changxu type.
