While other western countries have abolished the death penalty,the United States still retains it.The traditional way of thinking tends to put forward a simplified and dualistic question between the"reservation"of the United States and the"abolition"of other western countries,but this way often ignores many influencing factors,thus producing a very misleading answer.Compared with other western countries,the death penalty and criminal policy in the United States have their own uniqueness,and there are also commonalities between them.We can't simply resort to American exceptionalism.To better explain the differences between them,we need to pay attention to the unique system and cultural form of the death penalty in the United States.Through revealing the special form of the death penalty in the United States,and through the discussion of the relationship between lynching and contemporary death penalty,this article explains the reasons why the death penalty is retained in contemporary America.
