The Change of Microbial Community on Xuan Paper Treated with Different pH and Its Affection
Traditional Chinese handmade paper is an important carrier of the ancient relics of books, paintings and calligraphies, which plays an essential role in the spread of Chinese culture. At present, these paper relics are facing great threats, including microbial damage and paper acidification. In this study, the effects of different pH treatments on the process of microbial erosion of Xuan paper,a type of traditional Chinese handmade paper, were studied by inoculating Xuan paper with mixed suspension of microbes isolated from some old paper samples from the late Qing Dynasty and the Early Republican, and were cultured under pH4.01,pH7.00,pH10.00 treatment. The results showed that pH significantly affected the bacterial community composition on Xuan paper. As pH increased, the bacterial community in the samples became more diverse. No such effect was seen on the fungal diversity. The correlation analysis showed that the change of bacterial community structure was more correlated with the surface pH,whereas the change of fungal community was more correlated with the change of paper weight.Cellulose degradation of paper was correlated with both bacteria and fungi similarly.
