Modern Technical Analysis of a Group of Ancient Xizang Papers
Xizang paper is a handmade paper with regional characteristics in China.Scientific analysis of ancient Xizang papers not only promotes the current understanding of ancient Xizang papers but also provides important new insights into the technological evolution of ancient Chinese handmade papers and exchange of cultures and materials. In this study, the fibers, fillers, sizing agents and ink composition of a group of ancient paper were obtained by microscopy analysis,pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The investigated Xizang papers used Stellera chamaejasme L,mulberry and Daphne papyracea as papermaking fibers. The papers contain filler and coating the surface. And the golden texts is written by copper-containing ink, silver texts by silver ink,and the ink on the three Xizang papers is very likely made of pine smoke ink. This study shows that the comprehensive analysis of ancient Xizang paper can not only know the special properties of ancient Xizang paper in different periods, but also benefit the research of ancient papermaking technology and the protection of paper cultural relics.
