A Study on the Inter-annual Latewood Growth of Pinus massoniana in Fuzhou
Dynamic monitoring of inter-annual stem radial growth of trees would give a better understanding of tree growth response to climate change.Preliminary investigations have found that the latewood percentage of Pinus massoniana is relatively high in Fujian. This paper focuses on the process of Pinus massoniana latewood's inter-annual stem radial growth based on the changing of latewood percentage. The onset of Pinus massoniana's latewood starts between [ate June and early July. The activities of cambium cells sign off in mid-November,following which the latewood cells are still in growth, characterized by the formation of thickening and dark cells.During the stage of the formation of latewood, its percentage increases slowly in July and in early October, respectively. The rapid growth of the latewood occurs between mid-August and late September. The study has crucial significance for climate reconstructions based on tree-ring records, especially in Fujian.
