Feng Menglong's "Sanyan stories" made adaptations to scripts for story-telling in Song and Yuan folk literature in roughly the following three aspects:first, the revision, addition and deletion of titles, which marked a breakthrough in literati's understanding of popular fiction;second, the elevation of the status of popular fiction, which signified the awakening of literati's consciousness of reform;and third, the emphasis on the popu-lar nature of literature, which indicated a new height of the combination of art and thought. In the process of compilation and creation,he paid attention to the arrangement of titles, emphasized the internal connection be-tween characters and events, and used the titles of novels to highlight the characteristics of characters. Therefore, through the adaptation of Song-Yuan story-telling scripts,he successfully shaped many typical images, but the portrayal of these characters conflicted with the value of the stories, which was manifested in works with com-plex plot structures and intricate character relationships and slightly inferior characterizations. In contrast to plot-driven novels, where the plot structure and character relationships were simpler, the shaping of characters was more three-dimensional and full-bodied. At the same time,Feng Menglong also enriched the original works by adapting or reconstructing their themes and focuses. He consciously infused "emotional education,"using the form of novels to instill and promote orthodox moral norms, and realizing the expansion of subjects and the strengthening of themes.
