Under the guidance of the cognitive theory and the upper echelons theory, this study systematically examines the impact of board cognition, cognitive need, and cognitive heterogeneity on corporate innovation performance.A two-dimensional team process, which is divided into the internal team process and the external team process,is introduced as a moderating variable.Through hierarchical regression analysis, the study finds that:the cognitive ability, cognitive needs and cognitive heterogeneity of the board of directors have a significant positive impact on corporate innovation performance;both the internal and the external team process positively regulate this relationship, and with the enhancement of the internal and the external team process, the impact of the cognitive ability, cognitive needs and cognitive heterogeneity of the board of directors on corporate innova-tion performance increases.Through comparison,it is found that the moderating effect of the internal team process is stronger than that of the external team process.
