Narrating Women's Liberation from"Sufferer"to"Rescuer":An Anthropological Analysis of the Film Moya Dai
This research analyzes the narrative theme and characteristics of the above film in the light of its producing process and histor-ical background.The film is narrated through two significant ethnic customs that have received much academic attention.By drawing on historical materials on ethnic work in the 1950s and anthropological studies,the research discusses the narrative emphasis in the film in terms of selecting,adjusting and reconstructing elements of these two ethnic customs into one story.The Dai custom of"Pipa Gui"causes suffering to Yilaihan while her abolishing of the Aini custom of"ghost birth"leads more women to new life.The film represents the eth-nic policies to abolish harmful ethnic customs and the pursuit of pogress,science and civilization.
