"Boundary Negotiation"in the Context of Gender Structures:"Production-Reproduction"Arrangement among Female Domestic Workers
Based on in-depth interviews with 48 female domestic workers in Beijing and Shanghai, this paper analyzes their boundary nego-tiation under the dual influence of the household registration system and the market. This can also be viewed as their"production-reproduc-tion"arrangement formed under the structural constraints. This paper holds that the dual disparate structure of urban and rural areas and the market affect through the family as the intermediary the"production-reproduction"arrangement among female domestic workers. The dual structure of urban and rural areas has a different degree of influence on female domestic workers'families, which forms a different degree of"separation of production and reproduction"in the family unit. The influence of the market on the women workers'families to different de-grees has resulted in the"commercialization of family reproduction"at different degrees. In the interweaving of different degrees of"separation of production and reproduction"and different degrees of"commercialization of family reproduction,"female domestic workers have formed four types of"production-reproduction"arrangements,namely,"reproduction subordinate to production","reproduction that is stripping away to center on production,""production and reproduction rotation"and"production subordinate to reproduction."
