Women as Doctors:Hackett Medical College and the Localization of the Women's Medical Profession in Modern China
The Hackett Medical College,as the longest-standing women's medical school with the largest number of graduates and exten-sive influence, holds significant symbolic and exemplary importance for gender equality in the construction of modern China's medical system.Despite being a missionary school, the Hackett Medical College had deep roots in the cultural characteristics and medical envi-ronment of Lingnan region in China.Considering the realities of women's education,it adopted a practical and popular approach in teach-ing.Hackett Medical College primarily trained clinical female doctors proficient in obstetrics and midwifery rather than medical elites. However,it was precisely through the clinical practices, midwifery education, and social participation conducted by the graduates of this college in local communities that they effectively promoted the introduction of Western medical knowledge and childbirth hygiene in mod-ern China, and contributed significantly to the construction of the social status and image of female doctors. While women's medical edu-cation and practices in modern times were inevitably influenced by the social, cultural, and gender norms imposed by nationalism and pa-triarchy,the self-adaptability and agency demonstrated by female doctors from this college highlighted the optimism and fortitude of women in medicine.
