"Couple Teams"in the Garment Industry:Intimate Labor Relations under"Real-time"Production Model Based on Fieldwork in Guangzhou Zhongda Textile District
This paper takes as an example the employment of the Couple as a Team in Guangzhou Zhongda Textile District to reveal the interactive logic between employers and employees under the"Real-time"production Model.The study reveals that the intimate relation-ship between the working couple becomes a tool for employers to meet unstable employment demand and fierce competition in the indus-try.In labor markets,employers hire"labor as a couple"in workshops through wage premiums and labor matching requirements.In the workplace,employers shape the social ties and control the workers through emotional incentives to generate shared responsibility,and transferred supervision.This hiring preference makes single workers use"temporary couples"as a strategy to increase their bargaining power.In dialogue with previous studies,this paper complements the intimate control centered on the couple's relationship.It is condu-cive to safeguarding the rights of informal employment groups and regulating the development of the garment manufacturing industry.
