From"Working Girls"to"Women Bosses":Migrant Women's Entrepreneurship and Construction of Social Relationships in Reform-era China
Drawing upon life history interviews with migrant female entrepreneurs who moved to Beijing in the 1980s,this article exam-ines these women's efforts at constructing social relationships for their entrepreneurship. For these young rural women who came to Bei-jing during the early stages of market reform, the most important social relationships in their businesses were often based on marriage and occupational connections. These relationships were acquired through their proactive efforts. They negotiated marital relationships to bal-ance business and family, created female circles that helped balance both business and personal life, and built business networks that crossed gender boundaries.Through a contextual analysis of how migrant women construct social relationships conducive to entrepreneur-ship,this study provides new insights and theoretical contributions to the research field of women's entrepreneurship and social networks.
