The using status and protection strategies of Cantonese in villages and towns in Foshan——Taking Xiqiao town as an example
Foshan Cantonese exhibits strong vitality,with local residents having a high level of proficiency in the language.They frequently use the local Cantonese for communication within families and in certain public occasions.Meanwhile,the survey also uncovers a declining trend in the acquisition and use of local Cantonese among the local population,particularly among the younger generation,both in terms of the proficiency and frequency of language use.The use and inheritance of Foshan Cantonese are relatively stable,which is related to factors such as a large population of Cantonese speakers and a strong sense of identity among users.However,the use and inheritance of Foshan Cantonese have also been influenced to some extent due to the promotion of Mandarin and changes in social production and lifestyle.To strengthen the protection and inheritance of local Cantonese,it can start from the following aspects:emphasizing the use and inheritance of language within families,using new media to attract young people to participate in activities that speak Cantonese,suggesting the government,society,and families work together to promote the protection and inheritance of local dialects.
