Genglubu of the South China Sea is a kind of navigation guide recorded by Chinese Hainanese fishermen while sailing and fishing on the South China Sea in the age of sail.The director courses indicate the sailing directions of sailboats,which are the core content and technical difficulties.There are 7 categories of director courses in the Genglubu of the South China Sea:single director course,division line director course,multi-directional director course,thread director course(1 thread is equivalent to about 1.5° of modern compass),opposite director courses,director courses departing for destination and returning director courses,and transit director courses.These director courses are displayed on the ancient Chinese 24-way navigation compass with 24 Chinese characters:子(zi)、癸(gui)、丑(chou)、艮(gen)、寅(yin)、甲(jia)、卯(mao)、乙(yi)、辰(chen)、巽(xun)、巳(si)、丙(bing)、午(wu)、丁(ding)、未(wei)、坤(kun)、申(shen)、庚(geng)、酉(you)、辛(xin)、戌(xu)、乾(qian)、亥(hai)、壬(ren).These 24 Chinese characters that signify the needle positions are selected from the Chinese traditional culture of"Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches","Five Elements and Eight Trigrams".Some characters such as"兼"(jian),"加"(jia),"添"(tian),"平"(ping),"相对"(opposite),"对东南"(towards southeast)and other Chinese characters are added in some director courses to show annotations and point more delicate sailing directions.With such historically and culturally distinctive Chinese characteristics,and Hainanese local knowledge properties,the director courses of the Genglubu of the South China Sea and their technological innovation are the ironclad proof of China's sovereignty over the South China Sea.
