Akabane virus(AKAV)can infect a variety of domestic and wild animals,causing abortions,premature births,stillbirths,and congenital abnormalities,encephalomyelitis and other clinical symptoms.This virus,mainly transmitted by mosquitoes and culicoides,has been reported in many countries and regions,seriously affecting livestock breeding and causing considerable economic losses.Because of AKAV wide distribution and great harm,Akababe disease(AKAD)has been listed as one of the diseases legally notified by the World Organization for Animal Health(WOAH).This article reviews the etiology,epidemiology,clinical symptoms,pathogenic mechanism and diagnostic methods of AKAV,in order to provide reference for the prevention and control of AKAD.
