Epigenetic changes in chromosomes during zygotic gene activation in mammals
After fertilization in mammals, the embryo gradually changes from maternal factor regulation to zygotic regulation, expressing zygotic transcripts, namely zygotic gene activation(ZGA).Dramatic epigenetic changes occur, such as histone modification,DNA methylation reprogramming and chromatin remodeling.Abnormalities in epigenetic remodeling can lead to severe developmental defects and even embryo death. Therefore, understanding the epigenetic changes in the ZGA transcripts is crucial to elucidate their pathogenic mechanisms. In this review, the recent advances in DNA methylation reprogramming, histone modification and chromatin remodeling during the activation of mammalian zygotic genes are reviewed in order to provide references for further investigation of the epigenetic changes of chromosomes during the activation of mammalian zygotic genes.
