An Exploration of the Multiple Identities of Ryukyuan Cheng Shunze:From the Perspective of East Asian Maritime Exchanges
Since the 17th century,the Ryukyu envoys regularly sent to China and Japan have not only fulfilled the political mission of"tribute etiquette",but also undertaken the task of collecting internal polit-ical and economic intelligence of the two countries and reporting it to their own country.At the same time,the envoys also actively absorb the culture and art of the suzerainty country in order to introduce them to their country.As a key figure in Ryukyu,China and Japan exchanges,Cheng Shunze(1663-1735)took Ryukyu as a base and traveled all over China and Japan.He has various identities such as diplomatic envoy,information transmitter,Confucian educator,and education disseminator.As an important"media",Cheng Shunze has become a Ryukyu"cultural symbol"that is widely recognized in East Asia.
