The North-South Differences in Interpersonal Trust and The Impact of Cross-Regional Experiences
Cross-cultural comparative studies have found that differences in social culture, ecological environment and other macro factors between different countries can affect many psychological factors, including interpersonal trust. However, the existing research is inconclusive as to whether the north-south differences due to geographical and cultural reasons in China, also lead to different levels of interpersonal trust. For this reason, the first study is based on the data of WVSWave7(2018),a survey of world values. It is found that southerners trust strangers significantly more than northerners. The second study further explored the influence of cross-regional(north-south)experiences on interpersonal trust through micro-investigation.The results show that those with cross-regional experiences trust individuals from the same region significantly more than those without cross-regional experiences, and there is an effect similar to that of"meeting an old friend in a new land",while there is a growing trend for those with cross-regional expe-riences to have their trust in strangers"as the Romans do in their hometown".
