Effect of Different pH on Root Growth and Leaf Physiological Characteristics of Pineapple Seedlings
In this experiment, the effects of different pH values(pH=3~9)were investigated on the physiological characteristics of roots and leaves of pineapple seedlings under hydroponic conditions using golden pineapple as the material. The results showed that the longest root length, root volume, root fresh weight and seedling fresh weight were decreased with increasing pH,indicating the inhibition of rooting and above-ground growth of pineapple seedlings at higher pH conditions. The chlorophyll content of pineapple seedling leaves were not significantly different between the different pH treatments. The carotenoid content of pineapple seedling leaves were significantly lower at pH=9 than at pH=3.The membrane permeability of pineapple seedling leaves were significantly higher at pH=8 and pH=9 than at pH=3.The soluble protein content of pineapple seedling leaves were significantly higher at pH=7,8,and 9 than at pH=3.The soluble sugar content and proline content of pineapple seedling leaves were not significantly different between the different pH treatments. The malondialdehyde content and peroxidase(POD)activity of pineapple seedlings were significantly higher at higher pH(pH=8 and 9)than at lower pH(pH=3).The superoxide dismutase(SOD)activity was not significantly affected by the different pH treatments. The catalase(CAT)activity of pineapple seedlings were significantly higher at higher pH(pH=9)than at lower pH(pH=3 and 4).The overall change in ascorbate peroxidase activity(APX)was not significant at the beginning and increased significantly at pH=9.There were no significant differences between the other pH treatments. In conclusion, the lower pH(pH=3 and 4)favored the growth of pineapple seedlings, while higher pH(pH=8 and 9)inhibited the above-ground and root growth of pineapple.
