Legal Challenges for Genetic Modified Crops:A Case Study of StarLink Corn
This study takes the StarLink Corn incident as a case to explore the legal and regulatory challenges faced by genetically modified crops.Developed by Aventis CropScience,StarLink Corn is a type of transgenic maize containing Cry9C,a protein from the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis, designed to resist certain pests.Although it was only approved for animal feed, the product inadvertently entered the human food supply chain, leading to widespread concern and legal litigation. This research analyzes the incident's impact on the agricultural industry, consumer confidence, and international trade, highlighting the need for stricter and more comprehensive legal frameworks in food safety and environmental protection. It also proposes further research on risk management, public acceptance, international legal frameworks, and legal challenges in emerging biotechnologies. This case provides important guidance and lessons for the legal and policy development of future genetically modified crops.
