Protective Effects and Mechanisms of Melissa officinalis Extract on Rat My-ocardial Injury from Acute Exhaustive Exercise
Lemon balm(Melissa officinalis L.)is a medicinal plant with a wide range of pharmacological activities, containing numerous beneficial bioactive compounds. The cardioprotective effects of lemon balm have attracted widespread attention. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects and potential mechanisms of Melissa of-ficinalis L.ethanol extract(MOEE)on rat myocardial injury induced by exhaustive exercise(EE).The study com-pared myocardial injury indicators, energy metabolism parameters, oxidative stress responses, and NLRP3 inflam-masome pathway activity among the control group(C group),EE group, and EE rats treated with different doses of MOEE(EE+L-MOEE,EE+M-MOEE,EE+H-MOEE).The results showed that compared to the EE group,MOEE treatment significantly improved myocardial energy metabolism levels, reduced lactate(LA)and blood urea nitrogen(BUN)levels, enhanced myocardial SOD and CAT activity, decreased MDA accumulation, and inhibited the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway, thereby mitigating myocardial cell pyroptosis. These findings suggest that lemon balm ethanol extract exerts a significant protective effect on myocardial injury induced by EE through improving oxidative stress response and inhibiting the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway. This study pro-vides experimental evidence for the application of lemon balm ethanol extract in preventing and treating exer-cise-related cardiac injury.
