Breeding of New Corn Variety'Jinling Silage 17'with Lodging Resistance and High Yield
Lodging is a severe problem affecting high yield and mechanical harvesting of silage corn. For the pur-pose of breeding new silage corn varieties with high lodging resistance,high-yield and good-quality,a mid-late maturing cultivar'Jinling silage 17'was bred from a 10-year program by crossing parents J178A and J340B with high lodging resistance and yield. The new cultivar inherited high lodging resistance from its parents and showed stability of high yield. The average fresh yield of'Jinling silage 17'was 90 612 kg/hm2,and average dry matter yield was 29 495 kg/hm2,which were 16.2%superior than the reference variety(P<0.01).Meanwhile,the dry mat-ter content of'Jinling silage 17'was 31.3%,crude protein content was 9.62%and nitrogen free extract content was 54.13%,insuring its high feeding value.Besides,'Jinling silage 17'was a disease-resistant,water-saving variety with a growth period of 118 days, enabled it to be popularized in those areas with effective accumulated tempera-ture above 2 600 ℃.
