The Essence of Digital Nomadism:A Case Study of Chinese Digital Nomads
With the advancement of globalization and digital technology, digital nomadism has gradually formed a new trend of professionalization worldwide. This study, based on a clear understanding of the concept of digital nomadism, referencing Deleuze and the image of Mongolian nomads in China, employs semi-structured interviews, observations, and online content analysis to explore Chinese digital nomads. It finds that while digital nomadism advocates"liberation""freedom"and"autonomy",ostensibly critiquing and opposing contemporary capitalism, the process of its development, including its commodification, professionalization, institutionalization, and the underlying meta-work,continues to mimic and resonate with the power dynamics present in commercial activities and institutional systems. In a sense, digital nomadism can be viewed as a response to market demands and an extension of capitalism, presenting itself as promoting"collaboration""decentralization""romanticism"and"self-reliance",yet fundamentally it is"driven by profit".
