Preparation and properties of PGA/TPEE blends with enhanced toughness
Polyglycolic acid(PGA)has the advantages of high strength, high modulus, excellent barrier performance and biocompatibility. Moreover, its application potential would be further enhanced by improving the toughness and processability of PGA.PGA/thermoplastic polyester elastomer(TPEE)/multiple epoxy extender(ADR)blends were prepared by melt blending method, where TPEE resin was used as toughening component and ADR was used as reactive compatibilizer and chain extender.Influences of ADR addition on rheological behavior, microstructure, mechanical performance and crystallization properties of PGA/TPEE(75/25)blend were studied in detail by using torque rheometer, melt flow rate(MFR)meter, rotary rheometer, scanning elec-tron microscope, electronic universal testing machine, differential scanning calorimeter and wide angle X-ray diffractometer. The results show that the addition of ADR increase the viscosity and melt strength and processability of the PGA/TPEE/ADR blends. While increasing ADR content to 0.9 phr,MFR of PGA/TPEE/ADR(75/25/0.9)blend decreases from 32.5 g/10 min of PGA/TPEE(75/25)blend to 13.2 g/10 min.Meanwhile, used as a reactive compatibilizer, the introduction of ADR obviously enhances the interfacial compatibility and toughness of PGA/TPEE blends. The elongation at break and notched impact strength of PGA/TPEE/ADR(75/25/0.9)blend increase from 54.6%and 4.5 kJ/m2 for the PGA/TPEE(75/25)blend to 329.3%and 16.1 kJ/m2,respectively.
