Properties of high-density polyethylene composites reinforced with basalt fiber/basalt particles
Basalt fiber(BF)and basalt particle(BP)reinforced high-density polyethylene(PE-HD)have excellent mechanical properties, especially high hardness, and were used in the manufacturing of termite resistant high-voltage cable sheaths.Firstly,BF and BP were modified by silane coupling agent KH550,then BP,BF and PE-HD were melted and mixed by torque rheometer, and finally PE-HD/BF/BP composites with different filler content were prepared by micro-injection molding machine. The morphology, mechanical properties, crystallization properties, thermal stability and rheological properties of the composites were studied by scan-ning electron microscope, differential scanning calorimeter, synchronous thermal analyzer, universal testing machine, dynamic mechanical properties analyzer, shore hardness tester and rheometer. The results show that compared with PE-HD,the mechanical properties and thermal stability of PE-HD/BF/BP composites are significantly enhanced by the introduction of BF and BP fillers. When BF content is 20 phr and the BP content is 10 phr(BF20BP10),the composite exhibits optimal mechanical properties, with the tensile strength and tensile modulus being 47.51 MPa and 3 331.39 MPa,respectively, which represent an increase of 41.7%and 211%.The hardness reaches 70.02HD,significantly exceeding the hardness requirement for termite-resistant cables, which is greater than 65HD.Therefore,it possesses superior termite-resistant performance.Compared to other formulas,BF20BP10 composite has higher crystallinity, storage modulus and smaller loss factor. Therefore, the optimal formula of PE-HD/BF/BP composite is BF content 20 phr,BP content 10 phr,the prepared sample has excellent hardness, good thermal stability and rheological properties, which is expected to be widely used in the field of cable sheathing materials.
