Compatibilization of CPE for TPU/PVC blended elastomers and phase morphology
In order to improve the compatibility of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer(TPU)and polyvinyl chloride(PVC),taking chlorinated polyethylene(CPE)as compatibilizer, the TPU/PVC blended thermoplastic elastomers were prepared by melting and blending with twin-screw extruder. The mechanical properties including tensile strength, elongation at break, hardness, and dynamic rheological properties, dynamic mechanical properties, thermal stability of the blended elastomers with different CPE contents were tested. The phase morphological structure of the blended elastomer was studied by scanning electron microscopy(SEM).The results show that when the mass ratio of TPU/PVC is 70/30,the comprehensive mechanical properties of the blended elastomer are the best, the tensile strength is 19.92 MPa,and the elongation at break is 972%.With the content of CPE increasing, the tensile strength, elongation at break and hardness of the TPU/PVC blended elastomer increase at first and then decrease. When the content of CPE is 6 phr,the tensile strength of the TPU/PVC blended elastomer is the best, which is increased by 19.1%to 23.73 MPa compared with that of the blended elastomer without adding CPE.The complex viscosity and storage modulus of the blended elastomer with adding CPE show a decreasing trend. In addition, the addition of CPE can also effectively improve the high tempera-ture thermal stability of the elastomer, the loss factor peak of the two components of TPU and PVC moves closer, the SEM photos of the liquid nitrogen embrittle-fracture section of the blended elastomer show that the PVC phase is significantly smaller and more uniform, which indicates that CPE has obvious plasticizing and compatibilizing effect on the blended elastomer, and the effect is best when the content of CPE is 6 phr.
